Building an accurate Wikipedia biography for a statistician with a common name
The challenge
Jiahua Chen is a professor of statistics at the University of British Columbia, where he held a Tier I Canada Research Chair from 2007 to 2020. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the American Statistical Association, and a recipient of the Statistical Society of Canada’s Gold Medal. His research covers finite mixture models, empirical likelihood, variable selection and survey sampling.
His academic record made notability straightforward. Writing the article was not.
The first difficulty was his name. “Jiahua Chen” and “J. Chen” appear on papers by several different researchers, including one working in fibre-optic sensing. His own field is crowded too, with other statisticians named Chen publishing on empirical likelihood, one of his main research areas. A citation that looks right at first glance can easily belong to someone else, and crediting a subject with another researcher’s work is one of the quickest ways for a biography to lose credibility.
The second was the research itself. Most of what has been written about Chen’s technical contributions appears in his own papers, and Wikipedia prefers a scientist’s work to be described through what other researchers have written about it. His results also sit in highly technical areas of mathematical statistics, where a section can easily drift into explaining methods rather than documenting a person’s work.
Our strategy
We verified authorship before any source went into the article. Each candidate paper was checked against his collaborators, his field and his ORCID identifier, and several that initially looked relevant were set aside because they concerned other researchers with the same or similar names.
For the research section, we set a strict rule: no citations to papers Chen wrote himself. Every statement about his research would rest on papers by other researchers that discuss, apply or build on it.
The biography and career sections were grounded in the Statistical Society of Canada’s Gold Medal citation, his Royal Society of Canada profile and official records from the organisations he has served.
Execution
The Gold Medal citation documented his early life, including the Cultural Revolution’s disruption of his schooling and the three years he spent working in construction before university, along with his postdoctoral fellowship and the years of his promotions at the University of Waterloo. His title at the Canadian Journal of Statistics was confirmed as editor-in-chief from the journal’s official masthead, and his doctoral record was matched to the correct Mathematics Genealogy Project entry.
The research section was then built paper by paper from the secondary literature. His work on finite mixture models is described through later papers by researchers including Martin Wainwright, Michael I. Jordan and Bin Yu, published in the Annals of Statistics and the NeurIPS conference proceedings. His extended Bayesian information criterion is described through the studies that adopted and extended it, and his work on survey imputation through a review in the International Statistical Review. Where later research refined one of his results, the article records that as well, which keeps the section accurate and neutral.
Throughout, each paragraph kept Chen at its centre, describing what he contributed and how other researchers have used it.
Results
The finished article carries 20 references, and its research section does not cite a single paper written by Chen. It covers his education, his career in Canada and China, his editorial and professional service, his research and his elected fellowships, with every attribution of research checked against the correct author.
The article was published on Wikipedia on 22 July 2026 with a declared paid-editing disclosure, as Wikipedia requires for commissioned articles.
